I said so.\u201d The lawmakers representing the then ruling party Nepal Communist Party cheered in applause, giggling as if the PM had announced a scientific fact. No MPs raised further questions,&nbsp; and Thapa\u2019s concerns went unresponded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gagan-Thapa1.jpg?resize=720%2C338&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gagan-Thapa1.jpg?resize=768%2C360&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Gagan-Thapa1.jpg?w=789&amp;ssl=1 789w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A year later, when the country was bearing the brunt of the second wave of the lethal pandemic, the PM again downplayed the situation. A day before his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/may\/10\/nepal-covid-uk-g7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article was published in the <em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>, PM Oli lied to the global community, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/08\/lies-lies-the-situation-is-not-under-control-as-claimed-by-pm-oli-with-cnn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Covid-19 situation in Nepal was \u2018under control\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com\/news\/pm-oli-makes-a-series-of-false-claims-says-corona-is-a-simple-cough-and-cold\/\" target=\"_blank\">In June, the PM said<\/a>, \u201cCovid-19 is like flu. If contracted, one should drink hot water, and sneeze the virus out.\u201d The PM also recommended people consume turmeric and <em>Gurjo <\/em>(Giloy) water to treat Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And on April 8, the Prime Minister went extreme and claimed <a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/health\/2021\/04\/12\/as-virus-cases-surge-in-nepal-experts-warn-against-lapses-and-complacency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gargling with guava leaves <\/a>could help get rid of Covid-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Nepal is reporting grim records of Covid-19 cases and deaths every day. But still, neither the PM has changed his statement, nor his supporters have objected to his false statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than strengthening the country\u2019s already weak health infrastructure, PM Oli was busy making false claims and inaugurating projects. The country\u2019s executive head had an entire year to plan to battle the pandemic.&nbsp; Nothing substantive was done for the whole year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM Oli proudly addressed the lower house, saying the government has successfully battled the pandemic, and the country has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/10\/lies-again-two-days-after-lying-to-the-cnn-about-nepals-covid-status-pm-oli-made-another-false-claim-in-the-federal-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adequate resources to fight the pandemic<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Collapse of health system&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking account of a rapid surge of Covid-19 cases, the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) &#8212; a non-profit organization of medical and dental doctors &#8212; on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/12\/nepal-medical-association-declares-red-alert-across-country-urges-everyone-to-unite-in-fight-against-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared a \u2018red alert\u2019 <\/a>throughout the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Rather than strengthening the country\u2019s already weak health infrastructure, PM Oli was busy making false claims and inaugurating projects.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The association stated that Nepal\u2019s health sector has reached a critical situation and urged everyone to unite in a fight against the virus. \u201cNepal\u2019s health sector is overwhelmed by Covid-19 cases due to the incompetence of the government,\u201d reads the statement issued by the association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/coronavirus-lack-of-beds.jpg?resize=720%2C483&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/coronavirus-lack-of-beds.jpg?resize=768%2C515&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/coronavirus-lack-of-beds.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The positivity rate is constantly increasing and has already hit the record high of 51 percent, according to the Health Ministry. As infection is spreading like a wildfire, hospitals are already overwhelmed and patients are turned away. There is a massive crunch of life-saving oxygen. People have already lost hope of getting any treatment. There is panic everywhere as the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/04\/30\/editorial-gross-irresponsibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">health system has already collapsed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until a few days back, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/10\/lies-again-two-days-after-lying-to-the-cnn-about-nepals-covid-status-pm-oli-made-another-false-claim-in-the-federal-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the PM was still lying to the people about the number of ICUs and ventilators<\/a>. While addressing the House of Representatives (HoR), PM Oli claimed that our health system has 3,000 ICU and 1,100 ventilator beds. However, the official data of the Health Ministry shows the country only has 1,423 ICUs and 583 ventilator beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/13\/covid-19-crisis-nepal-sees-8960-fresh-cases-and-214-deaths-kathmandu-valley-records-51116-cases-in-15-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nepal reported 214 deaths and 8,842 new cases<\/a>. The situation is already out of control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Teku Hospital \u2013 the only infectious disease Hospital in the capital \u2013 Covid-19 patients always wait for their turn to get a bed. \u201cThe hospital is overwhelmed. There are no beds available. We are treating patients in the corridor of the hospital. The health system has already collapsed,\u201d said Dr Sagar Rajbhandari, Director at the Teku Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>People are desperately waiting for their turn to get a bed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As other hospitals are not admitting patients, the patients are flocking to Teku Hospital hoping to get oxygen support. \u201cFamilies of Covid-19 patients come to the hospital seeking a bed, but we are helpless. We can\u2019t turn them away,\u201d Dr Rajbhandari told Nepal Live Today, further adding that the situation is already out of control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday afternoon, at least 12 patients were waiting for a bed in the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation of every other government hospital in Kathmandu Valley is the same. People are desperately waiting for their turn to get a bed. In many cases, patients are dying without getting any medical assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days ago, Dr Achyut Karki, Covid-19 focal person of Bir Hospital, said that there are always at least 10 patients waiting for a bed. The situation of the Lalitpur-based Patan Hospital is no different. The hospital added 80 beds last week, but all the beds are already occupied, and patients are in the corridor with the hope of getting a bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gasping for breath&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com\/news\/grande-hospital-stops-admitting-covid-19-patients-citing-scarcity-of-oxygen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As many as 12 hospitals have already stopped admitting new Covid-19 patients as they have run out of oxygen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a massive shortage of oxygen in the Kathmandu Valley. According to the Health Ministry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/04\/29\/menacing-second-wave-has-hit-the-country-do-we-have-enough-oxygen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Kathmandu Valley needs a total of 8,000 cylinders of oxygen daily<\/a>, but the demand has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/11\/health-minister-tripathi-refutes-allegations-of-irregularities-in-covid-19-vaccine-procurement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spiked up by another 6,000 cylinders<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com\/news\/five-covid-19-patients-die-in-butwal-covid-hospital-due-to-shortage-of-medical-oxygen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to a media report<\/a>, five Covid-19 patients succumbed to Covid-19 at Lumbini Provincial Hospital as a result of an acute shortage of oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government is making necessary arrangements to bring oxygen cylinders,\u201d said Dr Samir Adhikari, Joint Spokesperson of the Health Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 400 oxygen cylinders have arrived in Nepal from China. However, hospitals say that Nepal doesn\u2019t have enough plants to produce oxygen. \u201cThere is no shortage of cylinders; it is that Nepal has failed to produce oxygen. We don\u2019t have enough plants,\u201d said a promoter of a private hospital in Kathmandu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the government started to supply oxygen to hospitals through the recommendation of the Covid-19 Crisis Management Center, private hospitals are not getting enough oxygen,\u201d the promoter added.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/health\/2021\/05\/10\/hospitals-requiring-recommendation-for-oxygen-raises-concerns-about-red-tape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The government has directed oxygen suppliers not to sell or distribute oxygen without the recommendation of the CCMC<\/a>. \u201cAfter the government decision, we are getting only 150 oxygen cylinders a day. We are afraid about the situation. If the government doesn\u2019t increase the supply, we will not be able to treat Covid-19 patients anymore,\u201d said Dr Shail Rupakheti, Managing Director at Star Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>At least 400 oxygen cylinders have arrived in Nepal from China. However, hospitals say that Nepal doesn\u2019t have enough plants to produce oxygen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur hospital needs at least 230-240 oxygen cylinders a day. The situation of every private hospital is the same after the government started to supply a limited number of oxygen cylinders,\u201d said Dr Rupakheti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health Ministry had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/04\/30\/editorial-gross-irresponsibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued a statement 10 days ago stating <\/a>that the Covid-19 cases are increasing rapidly, and the system cannot control the pandemic, indicating the health system has already collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cries of the doctors&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medics are panicking and are helpless as there is no supply of oxygen and hospitals have already run out of beds. <em>\u201cI never felt such helpless in my ER [emergency room] duty. A couple of days back, the majority<\/em> of the patients weren&#8217;t maintaining oxygen with a reservoir bag and were in need of HDU\/ICU. But NONE available. Lost a young female at the 25th day of delivery to COVID in front of the <em>eye,\u201d<\/em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thesumanacharya\/status\/1391796114928529409\" target=\"_blank\">wrote Dr Suman Acharya <\/a>of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I never felt such helpless in my ER duty, couple of days back.<br>Majority of the patients weren&#39;t maintaining oxygen with reservoir bag and were in need of HDU\/ICU. However, in an recent interview with CNN, PM Oli blamed the general public for the spread of the virus in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health experts say the government itself is responsible for the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases. \u201cThe prime minister himself was busy inaugurating several projects gathering huge crowds. Several events were organized in the PM&#8217;s residence too. Political parties were protesting by gathering huge crowds. Isn\u2019t the government responsible?\u201d said a doctor at a government hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Babu Ram Marasini, former Director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, agrees that political parties acted as the spreader of the virus. \u201cWe had warned the government since the beginning that mass gatherings and rallies would trigger the rapid spread of the virus,\u201d he said, \u201cBut they did not listen. They brought cadres from different parts of the country to participate in the rallies. This movement contributed to the spread,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/04\/30\/political-parties-became-the-spreaders-pm-oli-triggered-the-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Marasini had told Nepal Live Today a week ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Crematorium running out of space&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The electric crematorium in the Pashupati is operating round the clock as the only electric crematorium is always overwhelmed with dead bodies. Likewise, the Pashupati Area Development Fund has set up a separate space in an open area to cremate Covid-19 casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Health experts say the government itself is responsible for the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn Tuesday, 110 bodies were cremated in Pashupati. The number is five times more than the bodies cremated in Pashupati on normal days. Also, the electric crematorium is operated round the clock. There is a panic situation at Pashupati,\u201d said Dr Pradip Dhakal, Member Secretary at the Pashupati Area Development Fund, further adding that the crematoriums at Pashupati are always full of bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/final-rites-ap.jpg?resize=720%2C469&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/final-rites-ap.jpg?resize=768%2C500&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/final-rites-ap.jpg?w=790&amp;ssl=1 790w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While vaccination is the only long-term solution to fight Covid-19, Nepal has only fully inoculated one percent of its population. The government already paid Serum Institute of India for a million doses of the Covishield vaccine, but the company is yet to supply the vaccine to India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has said that the Institute cannot supply the doses at the earliest, citing a massive fire that broke at the company recently. As tragedy is unfolding one after another\u2014amid rising numbers of deaths and infections\u2014Nepal reappointed K P Sharma Oli Prime Minister of the country on May 13\u2014he had <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2021\/05\/12\/despite-losing-confidence-vote-in-parliament-k-p-oli-still-controls-politics-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\">lost the vote of confidence <\/a>in Parliament on May 10 and was relegated to \u2018caretaker\u2019 status.
