{"id":49246,"date":"2024-05-15T19:38:20","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T13:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/?p=49246"},"modified":"2024-05-15T19:38:22","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T13:53:22","slug":"lamichhane-acquitted-by-high-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nepallivetoday.com\/2024\/05\/15\/lamichhane-acquitted-by-high-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Lamichhane acquitted by High Court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kathmandu:<\/strong> A division bench of judges Surya Darshan Dev Bhatta and Anju Uprety Dhakal of Patan High Court acquitted suspended national cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane of rape on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A division bench of judges overturned the verdict of the Kathmandu District Court to hand down an eight-year jail term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Tirtharaj Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Patan High Court, the bench overturned the decision, citing a lack of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the District Court of Kathmandu convicted Lamichhane in the rape case and sentenced him to eight years imprisonment along with a fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 10, a single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal convicted the former captain of the national cricket team and pronounced a jail term and fine of half a million rupees for raping a girl in 2022. The half a million rupees\u2014of which Rs 300,000 is fine and the remaining compensation\u2014would be paid to the victim, the court had ordered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dissatisfied with the travel restrictions, Lamichhane moved to the Supreme Court, challenging the high court\u2019s decision.
